• Apologies, its been a while since my last post, its been a long summer…
    A brief update.
The new cooling system is up, running and doing a good job of moving the air. We have had several occasions where the unit […]

  • Thumbnail
The holes are drilled and the duct work has turned up. Not long now and we should be operational on the new cooling system.

  • ThumbnailThe drilling has finally started so there is no turning back now. The images below show the containment structures that have had to be erected to stop dust contaminating the data centre.
All is going well, but it VERY noisy!

  • Thumbnail Well its the morning of the move and the boys are in. All seems to have gone swimmingly (I shouldn’t be so surprised). The planning has paid off and we now have plenty of room to bring the new ducting into the data centre for both inflow and extraction. The boys on the floor making sure it all [...]

  • ThumbnailPlacement of the PoP before the big move The rack on the left is an Internet Regional PoP and its right in the path of the proposed ducting route for the new cooling system. Tomorrow morning its being moved one metre to the right. Not to scary you say, but there is an awful lot of fibre coming into the [...]

  • A visit to site by our installation company has resulted in the hole in the walls doubling in size, there is going to be a very large volume of air flowing through…
The plans have just turned up though, full speed ahead I guess then.

  • Todays fun began with two meetings about the installation of a meter to measure the electrical consumption of our current air conditioners. When installed, we shall take readings for a few months which should give us sufficient data to flatten out any “hot days”.

  • Starting to prep the Data Centre for the works, only to discover a corroded waterpipe. Yikes….! Only well, better to discover it while its still holding than after it bursts I suppose.
    Every cloud and that!

  • One of the biggest issues we face on the project is the relocation of a communications rack that is right in the way of where the inflow/outflow conduit is going to enter the data centre. What makes this worse is that this particular rack contains the Janet Regional Point of Presence (PoP), so fibres from upstream and [...]

Welcome to the Worcester College of Technology Greening the Data Centre blog. This is a Jisc funded project where we will replace our current air conditioning units with Evaporated Cooling systems and PhotoVoltaic cells. Evaporative cooling units operate at much greater efficiences than traditional A/C and we are hoping to use the PV cells to…[Read more]
